Introducing the Carpathian Mountains

This gorgeous log cabin in the CZARNORZECKO-STRZYZOWSKI national park is an excellent base for exploring the Carpathians, whose beauty remains relatively undiscovered by Western Europeans. In winter, skiing holidays are very popular and considerably cheaper and more relaxed than in the Alps. In summer, the region is fantastic for hiking, cycling, horse riding and water sports on Lake Solina. There are also a number of spa towns, heritage sites and museums to visit throughout the area.

The ‘Ruthenian’ folk trail

Straddling, Slovakia, south eastern Poland and the Ukraine, the Carpathians have long been home to a unique ‘Ruthenian’ folk culture which still echoes in the traditional wooden houses and churches, and the folk festivals that are held throughout the summer months. The beautiful wooden church at Gogołów is just a 12 mile drive from the log cabin, and the Rural Architecture Museum at Sanok is just an hour away.

The Bieszczady - ‘Wild Europe’

The Carpathians are Europe’s wilderness. They are home to some the last wolf and bear populations we have. In Poland, such rare wildlife can still be found in the breath -taking Bieszczady mountain range, which starts just 40 miles to the east at Sanok.
